About Us

Who is Rajani Baker?

Welcome to Rajani Baker – a unique retail destination where British and Indian cultures beautifully intersect. Our business was founded in the charming St. John's Wood area of London, just a stone's throw from the iconic Baker Street. As many of you may know, 221B Baker Street is the legendary address of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective, Sherlock Holmes.

The inspiration behind the name "Rajani Baker" comes from our founder, Victoria, a true film enthusiast with a deep admiration for the works of Indian director and author Satyajit Ray. Ray's iconic detective, Feluda, is India's answer to Sherlock Holmes, and his fictional address is 21 Rajani Sen Road in Kolkata, India. By combining these two beloved addresses – Baker Street in London and Rajani Sen Road in Kolkata – the name "Rajani Baker" was born, symbolizing a bridge between two rich and vibrant cultures.

At Rajani Baker, we offer a meticulously curated selection of products that reflect the heart and soul of India, while celebrating the best of British style. Whether you're looking for home décor, accessories, unique gifts, or handcrafted textiles, we bring you the finest of both worlds.

Explore our collection today and experience the fusion of British elegance and Indian craftsmanship like never before.

What inspired your logo?

Our logo is inspired by the desert state of Rajasthan, India, where the majority of our textiles are made. On a trip to Jaipur, India's "Pink City" in Rajasthan, Victoria purchased a traditional Rajasthani silk painting which hangs in our office. Among the animals featured is a camel adorned with tassels and textiles, with a very distinct stride. The floral elements in our logo were inspired by the elegance of William Morris, a revered English artist and textile designer from the 1800s who was a social activist for the British Arts and Crafts movement. The idea lovingly came to life by Indian artist/designer Samira, owner of design studio Essebe Designs.

Where are your products made?

All of our products are either designed or made in the Indian diaspora. This means that our products have some connection to either India or brand founders/designers/artists/makers of Indian origin living in the vibrant and diverse Indian communities around the world (which make up 15.5 million people!).

The majority of our products are handmade, highlighting traditional craftsmanship and artistry. Because of this, products may have small irregularities which make each one a one-of-a-kind piece!

Our current collection includes our own eponymous brand as well as brands with founders of Indian heritage who are based in England, Spain, USA, and India. You can learn more about each of our brands on the About Our Brands page.

We very proudly support South Asian-run small businesses at all points in the supply chain and for our operational services. If you have a brand or are an artist, product designer, or e-commerce service provider that meets this criteria and you would like to collaborate with us, please reach out to: hello@rajanibaker.com.
